Jim Ife

Jim Ife has been active in community work and social work education since the 1970s, having been Professor of Social Work and Social Policy at the University of Western Australia, Curtin University, and the University of Western Sydney. His book on community development, initially published in 1995, was one of the first to connect a social justice perspective with Green political theory as a basis for community development that met the requirements of both social justice and genuine sustainability. There have been several editions since, and the book is still used in many community development programs. Jim has also been active in the field of human rights, and was foundation Handa Professor of Human Rights Education at Curtin University. His book “Human Rights from Below” developed a community development framework for human rights practice. He has been active in various community organisations concerned with social justice, human rights and ecological sustainability, and is now retired and living in the South-West of Western Australia.
